01 / THE ARTIST
Getting to know Tyla
From Johannesburg to popiano
Tyla was born and raised in Johannesburg. Sony’s biography lists Indian, Zulu and Irish ancestry. That is part of her artist background; her own account of the music places its roots in South Africa.
She brings amapiano together with pop melodies and R&B vocals, a combination often called popiano. Discussing her debut album, she explains why South African sounds and collaborations should remain audible as the music moves between genres.
From “Water” to A*POP
The story began before “Water”: “Getting Late” with Kooldrink arrived in 2019. “Water” became the international breakthrough in 2023, followed by debut album TYLA on 22 March 2024. Her second studio album, A*POP, arrived on 24 July 2026 with 14 tracks in its standard edition.
The Recording Academy lists two Grammy wins: Best African Music Performance for “Water” in 2024 and “PUSH 2 START” in 2026. The listening route below moves from the breakthrough to the current album period; it is not a confirmed concert setlist.
The Norway record before the Oslo date
Tyla performed at Slottsfjell in Tønsberg on 11 July 2025. The festival’s own archive marks the 2025 visit as completed, and dated concert photographs document the performance. The Oslo concert is therefore not her first documented concert in Norway.
Earlier Oslo plans should be distinguished from completed shows. A March 2024 date was postponed to Sentrum Scene in February 2025 before that booking was also cancelled, according to VårtOslo’s contemporary reporting. Status below follows the archive’s evidence; an announced date does not confirm a performance.
